Grant, new premises bring WhiStle launch closer
WhiStle Radio, 102.7 CIWS-FM, has received a $15,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for capital equipment purchase.
“This money will be used to purchase a transmitter, antenna, and a main studio console, as well as some other sundry equipment,” said WhiStle CEO Jim Priebe, who noted that the station hopes to begin test broadcasts around March 1.
“The station IDs that we’ll be playing during our Industry Canada testing have an interesting history,” he noted. “They’re done by a professional whistler in Los Angeles, Guerin Barry, who stumbled across our website. Guerin whistles for movies, TV shows and commercials. He can even whistle two notes at the same time.” Sceptics can visit trainedwhistle.com to hear for themselves, he said. “Testing takes three to four weeks and is meant to ensure that we don’t interfere with other stations.”
Total fundraising efforts to date have netted $45,000 in equipment, premises and cash, said Mr. Priebe. The station is looking for local volunteers to help with the construction of the new studios at 6280 Main Street.
Materials to build the studio have been donated, and Stouffville resident Ivan Harris, who was a CBC employee for more than 40 years, has designed the studio, and will also be hosting a show. WhiStle Radio is a not-for-profit station dedicated to airing news, views, spoken-word entertainment and music of interest to people living in Whitchurch-Stouffville.
