February at the Latcham Gallery
This year the Latcham Gallery is celebrating a remarkable milestone. Started in 1979, it has been exhibiting work by contemporary Ontario artists for 30 years.
Admission is free and thousands of visitors pass through its doors every year.
In 2009, the gallery launches its season with a solo exhibition called Replay by Bowmanville artist Todd Tremeer. Todd has studied the history of painting and the painting of history, and his work combines both concepts. He is interested in how we represent history visually and interpret the past through our representations.
Whether the subject matter is objects found in the backrooms of museums, images from ads or museum dioramas of war battles, Todd adds his own vision to the images to present another perspective.
Todd will visit the Latcham Gallery on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. to give a talk about his exhibition. The event is free and everyone is welcome. He returns on Feb. 15 to lead a watercolour painting workshop for adults. For information and to register call 905-640-8954.
Replay closes Feb. 18 so the gallery can prepare for one of the most exciting events of the year: the annual Juried Exhibition. For two days, artists from across Ontario will drop off their works, and a three-person jury, consisting of artists and art professionals, will carefully consider each one, selecting around 35 from hundreds of submissions to make up this year’s exhibition.
The exhibition will open to the public on Feb. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. and will showcase fine work by a diverse group of contemporary artists. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening, enjoy some wonderful, original art and meet the artists who created it.
February is the month to show you love your gallery. Please visit the exhibitions and become a member for this exciting anniversary year. We look forward to seeing you.
