April at Latcham Gallery

by Maura Broadhurst

What better way to celebrate spring than to visit the Latcham Gallery for What does a work of art sound like? an afternoon of art and music on April 4, starting at 2 p.m.

Local musicians are invited to perform pieces inspired by the art displayed in the current Annual Juried Exhibition, which features a wide range of work by artists from across southern Ontario. Subjects include landscapes, portraits, animals and abstract work.

Performers are encouraged to find a work that reminds them of a piece of music or inspires them to compose something new.  It could be the painting of the fat cat lying on a rug, the row of dressed up trophies, the abstract fantasy island sculpture or the painting of unusual blue trees against a vibrant yellow sky.  Whether you’re an instrumentalist, an experienced folk singer, a budding rock’n’roll star or anything in between, we’d love to have you join us.

We invite the public to come and enjoy an amazing afternoon that brings together artists and musicians in one space. If you are a musician who would like to sign up or find out more, please call the gallery at 905-640-8954.

On April 18, we open a new exhibition of work by three photographers.  HERE will bring together the work of Carmel Brennan of Sunderland, John Krasinski of Oshawa and Rick Vincil of Toronto.  All three have been part of past juried exhibitions.

In all their photographs, people are absent but their presence is felt by the traces they leave behind and the unseen presence of the artist.  Whether the photograph is of a Lake Ontario shoreline, the window of an old house, or the detail of rocks along a path, each body of work provides glimpses into the lives of the artists through the moments they capture.

The places they select have a meaning to them because of the history and stories they embody.  The images begin a narration about the locations themselves but they also give insight into the experiences of the artists.

Spring offers the perfect excuse to wander beside Duffin’s Creek and discover – or rediscover – Stouffville’s sculpture walk. Pick up a self-guided tour pamphlet from the Latcham Gallery and learn about these outdoor works of art while enjoying a stroll through your town.  Our spring term classes are also starting up this month giving you the chance to be creative once again.

When you need to escape the gloominess of today’s world, drop by the Latcham Gallery for beauty, creativity and discovery.
