Help for Haiti

The tragic earthquake in Haiti has killed hundreds of thousands of people and left countless others without food, clean water or shelter. Local organizations, including cbm, are asking for donations to help with ongoing relief work in the country. To make a donation visit cbmcanada.org or call 905-640-6464.

Reesor Farm Market, in conjunction with the Mennonite Central Committee, is holding a blanket drive and will accept donations of blankets, sheets and relief kits from now until Feb. 6. St. James Presbyterian Church is hosting a concert on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. to raise funds for the Presbyterian World Services and Development aid efforts in Haiti.

Whitchurch-Stouffville’s community radio station, WhiStle Radio, is a quirky delight, offering an eclectic mix of music, talk and sport, with plenty of local content and entertaining, informed presenters.

WhiStle offers a welcome alternative to mainstream stations, but it cannot exist on goodwill and volunteer help alone, and long-term financial support is urgently needed. If you care about our radio station, email or write to your councillor, contact the Stouffville Free Press or send a note to stouffvilleonline.com with your comments and suggestions. You can also help by taking out a station membership.

Nineteen on the Park is becoming a haven for movie fans. In addition to Starlight Cinema’s Film Circuit series, the facility has introduced some Saturday matinee screenings, including a Jan. 30 presentation of the all-time classic, Gone with the Wind. Flat screen TVs and home theatres notwithstanding, an afternoon or evening at the movies in the company of friends and neighbours is a great way to spend free time without breaking the bank.

February is the shortest month, even though it sometimes feels like the longest. Its benefits are not always obvious, but among them is the Musselman’s Lake Winter Carnival, which takes place Feb. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy seasonal activities and entertainment for all the family. And Willowgrove Outdoor Education Centre is open to the public Feb. 15 for indoor and outdoor family activities.
