Movie Matinees on the Park

In addition to Starlight Cinema’s monthly Film Circuit series, Nineteen on the Park is screening some Saturday matinees, including the all-time classic, Gone with the Wind, which will be shown Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. Individual tickets are $7.50, or $5 for Film Circuit members who bring their season pass to the box office at the time of purchase.

On Feb. 10 at 7 p.m., Starlight Cinema presents Departures, the moving and sweetly comic story of a Japanese cellist who loses his job when his orchestra is disbanded. In his desperate search for employment, he answers an ad entitled Departures, which he assumes has been posted by a travel company. Instead, the ad is seeking a funeral professional to perform the ceremonial preparation of bodies for cremation.

Despite misgivings on the part of his wife and others, he takes the job and begins to develop a deeper understanding of the journey between life and death, and the affect on those who are left behind when a loved one dies. Departures won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

“The ultimate beauty of the film rests in its symbolic details that bridge the abyss between the living and the dead. As the French might say, it is to make one cry,” noted New York Observer critic Andrew Sarris.

The March 10 Starlight Cinema presentation is Cairo Time, starring Patricia Clarkson and Alexander Siddig. Look for details in the March issue of the Free Press. Individual tickets are $7.50 for all Film Circuit movies and season passes are $30, which covers the remaining five movies in the series. Films are shown at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month until June 2010.

Tickets and passes are available from the Nineteen on the Park box office. All movies for the Starlight Cinema series at Nineteen on the Park are supplied by Toronto International Film Festival’s Film Circuit. The series is sponsored by the Stouffville Free Press.
