To the Editor:

I just read your column entitled ‘Bra Wars.’ I look forward to the arrival of the Stouffville Free Press and I always look forward to your columns.

I, like most women, can certainly relate to the woes of finding a bra that fits comfortably and provides the necessary support. You wouldn’t think that something so necessary would be so complicated. Your column described the process all too well and with your ever-present humour.

The purpose of my letter though is to comment on what I saw as a lack of sensitivity toward women who have chosen to have breast augmentation. I am one of those women. I will hazard a guess and say you personally don’t know anyone who has breast implants.

Your column would have stood very well without the sentence: “Nor is she in possession of a set of fake pneumatic appendages resembling giant melons.” My ‘appendages’ do not resemble melons. Or soccer balls. They are cuddly and soft, not at all like a stainless steel vegetable steamer.

I have heard many women make these sorts of comments and others and they are always women who are perfectly healthy or blessed with breasts. Unless you have had the misfortune to be a grown woman with breasts the size of pancakes, and flat pancakes at that, you wouldn’t understand.

Yes, I have seen many women who have obvious implants and they are ridiculously over-sized, but that was their choice, or they had a lousy surgeon. Whatever the case, the choice was theirs, and mine, to make.

My decision to get implants was an easy one. At the age of 40 I decided I’d had enough A cups in my life. It was go C or go home. There are many things that have brought me joy in my life; my children and my husband top the list. But close to the top of that list are my beautiful C cups. I love them! I did it for me and only me and I enjoy having them. After all these years I finally feel like I have a woman’s body. I wasn’t an unhappy woman before my surgery, nor did I for one minute think that breasts were going to change my world into sunshine and lollipops. They were simply icing on the cake I already had. My breasts do not define who I am, they are simply a part of who I am.

For all the women out there who have obvious implants, there are many more of us who don’t. You may even know one of us. Let us women be supportive of one another; no pun intended.

A C Cup Reader

Stouffville

Our fun-filled art camp starts July 7 with seven sessions running throughout the summer. Some weeks are already full so if you’re interested, please call soon to get a spot. It is also a wonderful time of year to enjoy the Sculpture Walk and you can drop by the gallery for a written guide.

If you haven’t already done so, be sure to come and see Errance, an exhibition of artwork by First Nations’ artist Greg Staats, whose photography and videos explore his Mohawk heritage. To understand his ancestors better, Staats visited the region where he grew up and where his parents and grandparents lived. He found that certain sites would trigger memories: a tree, a path, a building.

Errance means to wander with purpose. Through his wanderings Staats has created simple but poetic images of seemingly insignificant moments, resulting in beautiful vignettes. They offer ideas and suggestions, and invite us into his world in order to discover our own. This exhibition continues until July 12.

On the evening of July 17, join us for the opening party of Words Unspoken. This exhibition presents the work of six women who call themselves the W. Collective: Wan Ki An, Monica Bodirsky, Martina Edmondson, Vanessa Li, Koeun Park and Hoi Yee Wong. Each artist has interpreted the theme of the exhibition through her own experiences. The artists use a variety of media, including fibre arts, metals and found objects, to address issues of belonging, loss, isolation and love. They will be present at the opening and you will have a chance to speak to them about their work. The exhibition continues until Aug. 30.

We wish you all a safe and happy summer and hope that you will make visits to the Latcham Gallery, your public gallery, a regular part of your summer fun.
